🔹 Introduction
Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a common hormonal disorder
🔹 Symptoms of PCOS

- Excessive hair growth (hirsutism)
- Acne and oily skin
- Unexplained weight gain
- Thinning hair or hair loss
- Difficulty conceiving (infertility)
- Multiple small ovarian cysts detected on ultrasound
🔹 Causes and Risk Factors
Although the exact cause of PCOS is unknown, several factors are believed to play a role:
- Genetic predisposition: PCOS often runs in families.
- Insulin resistance: High insulin levels can lead to excess androgen production.
- Hormonal imbalance: Elevated androgens disrupt ovulation.
- Lifestyle factors: Sedentary lifestyle and poor diet can worsen symptoms.
🔹 Complications of Untreated PCOS
Complication | Description |
---|---|
Infertility | Due to irregular ovulation or anovulation |
Type 2 Diabetes | Increased risk due to insulin resistance |
Cardiovascular disease | High cholesterol, hypertension, and obesity increase risks |
Endometrial cancer | Long-term anovulation increases the risk |
🔹 Diagnosis
Doctors use the Rotterdam criteria for diagnosis, requiring two of the following three:
- Irregular or absent ovulation
- Clinical or biochemical signs of high androgens
- Polycystic ovaries on ultrasound
Additional tests may include blood tests for hormone levels and metabolic screening.
🔹 Treatment and Management
1. Lifestyle Modifications
- Balanced diet with low glycemic index foods
- Regular exercise to improve insulin sensitivity
